Gertrude was the first black headteacher in Yorkshire, having taught at what is now Bracken Edge primary school and was a founding part of Leeds West Indian Carnival.

The design is based on the Poinciana flower of St. Kitts (where she was born) it is the national flower of St. Kitts and Nevis and is commonly referred to as flamboyant or flame of the forest.

Heather Paul “My mum was many things, and loved being involved in lots of local community events beyond the school gate as an an educational and community activist. She was a talented musician, a playwriter, a poet and great storyteller for children.”

Ca Spaces “we absolutely adore it and it’s such a fitting tribute to a wonderful lady”
